Emergency tips

Do:

  • Remove anyone from the home that is suffering any respiratory issues if needed.
  • Look out for the safety of all persons affected. Watch for falling ceilings and slippery floors.
  • Call 541-474-5587 for emergency boardup and services that will prevent further damage to your home.
  • Wipe water from furniture after removing table-top items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture and wet carpet.
  • Remove area rugs from wet wall-to-wall carpet or wood floors.
  • Remove valuable paintings and art objects to a secure and dry place.
  • Open suitcases and luggage for drying, in sunlight if possible.
  • Pick up newspapers and magazines from wet floors.
  • Stay out of rooms where wet ceilings are sagging.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately.
  • Dry wipe chrome fixtures to prevent corrosion from the acidic smoke.
  • Remove valuables, money, guns and jewelry from your home and keep in a safe place. It is sad but damaged homes are targets for burglars.
  • Keep doors to unaffected rooms closed to prevent the spread of odor.

Don’t:

  • Try to clean the walls. Incorrect cleaning can set the smoke stains.
  • Leave wet fabrics in place; dry them as soon as possible.
  • Use a household vacuum cleaner to remove water or on a wet surface.
  • Use TVs, electronics, or other household appliances while standing on wet carpet or surfaces.
  • Use any electrical appliance or device if they are or have gotten wet.
  • Turn on lights or electrical appliances in wet areas.

What do I do if my insurance company says they have a “preferred” contractor for me to use instead of you?

In the state of Oregon only the homeowner can choose and authorize a company to work on their home so it is your choice and yours only. The insurance company may have a preferred contractor and there is only one reason for this: to save the insurance company money. A contractor that gets their work from the insurance company will be loyal to that company. Their goals and specifications may not be the same as yours. We work for you and only you. All contractors licensed in the state of Oregon by way of a bond essentially give a guarantee to the homeowner for defects in workmanship. In addition to that we will match any guarantee offered by your insurance company in writing.Top of Page

Homeowner’s Bill of Rights

Your Rights as a Homeowner.

  1. Oregon law states that only the owner of a home can authorize work to be done on that property.
  2. If you choose us to complete the work on your home we work for you.
  3. The contractor that your insurance company may want you to use will be loyal to the insurance company because that is where their income comes from. Their goals may or may not be the same as yours. “As an insurance “preferred vendor” the contractor does not have free rein to complete a restoration as they see fit. The insurance company has the final word. Often the insurer will limit the allowable reimbursement or the scope of repairs even if the property owner or contractor believes more extensive work is necessary..” Walter Lumpp, Director of the NIR (National Institute of Restoration).
  4. All licensed general contractors (which we are) work is guaranteed by way of the $20,000.00 bond that is required by Oregon state law.
  5. We offer you the convenience of letting us complete all aspects of the job, bill your insurance company for you, and offer you the same quality service we have been giving our customers since 1977.

Will the smell ever go away?

Yes it will. We have a 100% success rate of odor removal on fire jobs. This is the number one reason you want to be in charge of choosing your contractor rather than just going along with the recommendation of your insurance company. The attention to detail that we are well known for is the reason for our great odor removal success rate. If you clean and deodorize 999 items in a home and miss just one it can be very difficult to find that one item that causes the lingering odor. Top of Page

How do you do the work?

First we look out for the safety of all parties involved. Then we take steps to contain the damage such as drying out any wet areas, cleaning items that will corrode from the smoke and boarding up the home if needed. Then we remove any materials that will be replaced, spray a suppression deodorizer to prevent cross contamination. Then comes the long process of cleaning with a solution that contains a deodorizer specifically suited to the material that has burned and this is called a pairing deodorizer. Then some materials will be sealed and painted. Then the reconstruction begins. Top of Page
